, What is the policy alternative?
According to research findings, a policy alternative becomes relevant when an existing policy
has failed to resolve the crisis that policymakers initially planned to fix with the first established
policy (IGI Global, Retrieved 2022). The original policy was created in 1968 where a decision in
Terry v. Ohio, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that police officers could stop and frisk individuals
based on reasonable suspicion that a crime was being committed (U.S. Department of Justice,
Retrieved 2022). After years, policy makers determine that “stop and frisk” was deemed
unlawful and that many individuals were wrongfully targeted for crimes they weren’t
committing. After decades of this policy being utilized by law enforcements and many
individuals being wrongfully targeted, stop and frisk was found unconstitutional. What is the
policy alternative? Although a specific alternative has not been placed, alternatives include anti-
gang initiatives, and gun control programs that have been deemed successful in some big cities in
the United States (Murphy, Retrieved 2022).
What, if any, change(s) in the policy alternative are necessary, and where will they need to
occur (local or state)?
If there were to be changes to address the policy alternative, I believe they should be done at
a national level since instances of the issue at hand have been documented around the U.S. Being
able to address these changes at a national level would mean that more things would have to be
considered including: specific rules to follow, funding needed, any additional adjustments
needed in order to ensure all needs are addressed and finally, ensuring that all of this information
is distributed and delegated across the country.
Is this policy alternative congruent with social work values? Explain.
