What is a crisis? A crisis is an overwhelming event, which included be not limited to divorce,

violence, the passing of a loved one, or the discovery of a serious illness. What is a disaster? The

American College of Emergency Physicians defines disaster as “when the destructive effects of natural or

man-made forces overwhelm the ability of a given area or community to meet the demand for health

care.” The World Health Organization defines it as “a sudden ecologic phenomenon of sufficient

magnitude to require external assistance.” Crisis and disaster are one in the same word, there are many

types but the top three are natural disasters, terrorism, and flu pandemic.


Disaster far and near

A natural disaster are earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and floods. Floods are responsible for

half of the deaths related to disasters. Flooding cause drowning, hypothermia and trauma. A power of a

flood is always underestimate and that is what leads it to be the lethal account for disasters (Zibulewsky,

2001). Hurricanes are also called typhoons or cyclones. Just like flooding people underestimate

hurricanes and believe that they can wait it out. Hurricanes have the winds speed of 70 mph (Zibulewsky,

2001). The storm surges alone is responsible for 90 percent of the fatalities after a hurricane (Zibulewsky,

2001). Hurricanes can use be waited out but when flooding and storm surges are involve the mortality is

high. Floods and Hurricanes are involves with water and water can be unpredicted able to a sense of you

never know it full strength until the last moment. Tornadoes are lethal and compared to a hurricane which

is also an atmospheric condition, tornadoes are the most lethal. With a width span which can be up to a

half-mile and winds up to 310 mph and traveling up to 185 miles (Zibulewsky, 2001). There are no

questions that tornadoes are cause the most disaster if give the right atmospheric conditions. Volcanoes

have been the definition of disaster since ancient times. City would build around them and worship the

power that they have on the earth. Out of all of the disaster, Volcanoes is the only one that can create

something after. Volcanoes are the only disaster that people are prepared for because of how much
