Question 1
The most common barrier learners experience when reading is a lack of word
attack skills. These skills include phonetic analysis, structural analysis and
word patterns. Reading is a process and, if the learner’s perceptual skills are
not adequately developed, the learner may experience certain barriers to
reading.
1.1 Describe how you can identify learners who experience barriers to reading
due to the following undeveloped perceptual skills:
1.1.1 Directionality
When the following symptoms are being observed, you will know that a
learner is experiencing problems with directionality:
The learner confuses direction and is unable to tell the difference between
left and right, back and front or up and down.
The learner will leave out words and skip letters when spelling, reading or
writing.
The learner will frequently repeat the same sentence or words when
spelling, reading or writing.
The learner is unable to judge the direction from which and to which
something is moving.
The learner is unable to write line by line following from top to bottom
direction and from left-to-right direction on the page, thus resulting in the
learner writing randomly on the page.
The learner is unable to follow reading line by line and from left to right on
the page or to follow reading from the top to bottom of the page, thus
resulting in the learner not able to find a word in a sentence or to hold
his/her place while reading.
1.1.2 Laterality
When the following symptoms are being observed, you will know that a
learner is experiencing problems with laterality:
A right handed learner may only be concentrating on writing and reading
on the right side of a book or page. The left side of the book or page
remains blank when writing and usually gets overlooked when reading.
The learner turns or adjusts his/her body to function more on the right and
to avoid crossing the midline or turns the page over and writes or reads
only on the right side of the page.
A left handed learner may only be concentrating on writing and reading on
the left side of a book or page. The right side of the book or page remains
blank when writing and usually gets overlooked when reading. The learner
turns or adjusts his/her body to function more on the left and to avoid
crossing the midline or turns the page over and writes or reads only on the
left side of the page.
