Professor and class, Even though there has been improvements in communicable diseases, they still seem to exist. All it takes is for an epidemic of a disease and it could destroy a whole group of people. The medical profession treat the disease with antibiotics and then we start to see a new pathogen and drug resistance. Unfortunately the population that is at the greatest risk is minorities and the poor due to not having the means for treatment. (Nies, 2015) According to this week’s lesson another issue is, “Although vaccines are available to prevent certain diseases, many individuals are still not vaccinated, which makes them vulnerable to acquiring viral hepatitis, pertussis, and influenza”. (CCN, 2016) In reviewing the website on pandemics, a community health nurse should make sure that the community is aware that they need to make sure that they have at least two weeks of food and water on hand, copies of medical records on hand, have prescription medications filled and over the counter aids such as pain relievers and cold remedies should be purchased at the first signs of a problem. During a pandemic people need to be taught that they should stay in their homes if sick, avoid contact of people who are sick and wash your hands to stop
