COMPETENCE is a particular skill that an employee possesses
COMPETENCIES are observable abilities, skills, knowledge, motivations, or traits
defined in terms of the behaviour needed for successful performance.
COMPETENCY-BASED HR MANAGEMENT is a management methodology that
standardises and integrates all HR activities based on competencies that support
organisational goals.
BENEFITS OF A COMPETENCY-BASED APPROACH
Competencies provide direction: competencies provide organisations with
what they need to do in order to produce results that they desire, in a way that is in
keeping with their culture
Competencies are measurable: well-defined competencies enable the
organisation to evaluate the extent to which their employees demonstrate the
behaviours critical for success
Competencies can be learnt: competencies are characteristics of individuals
that can be developed and improved (organisations can train, monitor, coach, and
help employees to demonstrate these competencies)
Competencies can distinguish and differentiate the organisation: the way
in which organisations accomplish their results will vary depending on the
competencies that they use to achieve their strategy and organisational culture
Competencies can integrate management practices: competencies help
align all their functions to the desired behaviours that the organisation values and
wants
