Load shedding is aimed at removing load from the power system when there is an imbalance
between the electricity available and the demand for electricity. If we did not shed load, then the
whole national power system would switch off and no one would have electricity. Other issues which
have made load shedding inevitable include mounting debt, a lack of capacity, and state capture in
South Africa and Texas.
There are few similarities between the US state and South Africa, but one thing these territories
have in common is their hostility to business. Often because of limitations in generation capacity of
power stations, countries in both texts frequently resort to disconnecting large parts of the power
