SOCI READING RESPONSE 3 - IMMIGRATION
The term immigration refers to the permanent or temporary transfer of individuals or groups of
people to a country or place other than that of origin, and it is a phenomenon which origin it is
difficult to establish as since ancient times men have moved from their countries for different
reasons such as political or economic problems, education, wars and etc. Especially after the
Second World War to date, we have witnessed several emigrations to economically strong
countries to have more opportunities for success. Moreover, in recent years in Canada, there has
been strong immigration by students (but not only) from all parts of the world, who see a great
opportunity in the educational system of this country (one of the best in the world) that it will
allow them to have better job opportunities than in their native countries and the opportunity to
raise the standard of living. Unfortunately, Canadian universities and colleges take advantage of
these students and use them to fill gaps by increasing fees and taxes for these students. That's
exactly how it has been verified that international students pay a school fee 5 times higher than
domestic ones. For example, from my personal experience as an international student from Italy, I
pay around 21,000 dollars a year which I think is ridiculous.I can completely relate to this topic as
I'm being subjected to it directly as an international student.
Furthermore, international students represent the majority of students enrolled in Canadian
universities (each year the enrollments increase dramatically as shown in the article International
Students in British Columbia,) and in case international students are no longer interested in
studying abroad ( in our case Canada) and these enrollments decrease,it would be a big economic
problem for Canada. This is because the institutions and the government see international
students as commodities and focus only on the economic benefit. Most of the international
students are from India and China, but there are some minorities as me an Italian student, o from
