• Overview of the transition the woman goes through into her new maternal role o Rubin’s Maternal Tasks of Pregnancy • Ensuring a safe passage for herself and her child • Ensuring a social acceptance of the child by significant others • Attaching or “binding-in” to the child • According to Rubin, the mother-to-be needs to accept the pregnancy and incorporate it into her own reality and self-concept This process is known as binding in. • Giving of oneself to the demands of being a mother o When does the mom accept the pregnancy? When she feels the baby move, when they feel it, when they visualize it. It is going to be different for everyone, some people as soon as they find out, and some until after the baby is actually born. o Lederman’s “Seven Dimensions of Maternal Role Development” • Accepting the pregnancy • Identification with the motherhood role • Relationship to her mother • Re-ordering relationships with her partner • Preparation for labor • Prenatal fear of loss of control in labor • Prenatal fear of loss of self-esteem in labor • Common psycho-social changes that accompany pregnancy o Decreased ability to deal with stress and cope with changes of pregnancy o Major developmental phases ambivalence and conflicting emotions o Nursing care tailored through each pregnancy milestone o Refer to table 8-4 (psychosocial adaptations to pregnancy. • Special needs regarding specific patient populations o Teenagers • Specific concerns regarding teenage parents • Teen mothers are 7 times more likely to commit suicide than non-mothers. • 57% of teen mothers in one study wanted to go to college but they lacked the resources to make it a reality.
