They receive a number of inputs, in addition to the important cortical input, including:

 excitatory glutamatergic inputs from the thalamus;
 cholinergic input from striatal interneurons
 gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), substance P, and encephalin input from
adjacent medium spiny striatal neurons
 GABA input from small interneurons

-a large input from dopamine-containing neurons in the substantia nigra pars
compacta (SNpc)
