Shared governance in nursing describes how nursing staff and leadership come together to develop and implement decision-making processes and relationships within an organization. The development of this model is key to providing quality care, positive patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and nursing satisfaction. Having staff that is engaged in the decision-making process and have a vested interest in the process promotes a culture of excellence. A facility must address the differing needs within a community while following the mission and vision statements for the facility. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of a shared governance model at Saint Louis Medical Center by discussing and identifying the components of the shared governance model and key components, provide supporting evidence for implementation of the model, and provide examples of the importance of the shared governance model and how it impacts nursing.
