What is the nurse’s role in providing family centered care during and after a crisis? a. “The family is an integral part of the healing process of the critically ill patient, and critical care nursing interventions must also focus on the family” (Moseley, 2016, p. 21). During a crisis, the nurse should first assess the family and its structural, functional, and developmental aspects to confirm the best plan of care for the family and understand if the family has strong beliefs associated with culture or religion. The nurse should also identify the primary language the family wants to communicate in. Establishing a trusting partnership is essential to ensure honest and open communication is being performed. They can do this by providing them information and updates about the patient as well as offer support. The nurse should also encourage visitation, allow the family to be present during certain procedures if possible, allow the family or significant other to participate in the patient’s care, and allow time for questions to be asked, which reduces any frustration or confusion they may have. The nurse should also be an advocate for the family and ask for the patient’s children to be allowed to visit and have the family attend multidisciplinary team rounds to make sure their questions are being addressed. After a crisis, the nurse should provide the family some resources on support groups, continue communication and be able to assist the family with any further questions regarding the patient’s care after discharge. 2.
