Practicum Experience Plan (PEP)
A practicum course is usually planned way ahead of starting and schedule, it is
supervised by a person capable of teaching the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner “the
ropes” on how to teach, diagnose and how to gain confidence to treat patients that presents with
mental health issues. The goal of the practicum experience is to create a platform for the student
to synthesize, integrate, formally apply empirical skills, knowledge gained, and trainings
acquired in courses, to gain overall professional experience in a different public healthcare
environments.
Practicum experiences provides opportunities for students to observe the nitty-gritty of
the profession and thus, learn from professionals in the PMHNP world. The expectation is that I
will contribute to the community's development while helping to strengthen the solution of
public health problems by being a vital asset to the patient population and my organization. Since
I am new to the mental health world, my expectations are that this practicum experience will
provide the opportunity to hone in the skills I have learned so far; and help me create a
foundation for gaining knowledge in a new area of specialization.
As I now know, practicum placements and clinical sites are strategically hand-picked for
the purpose of helping students become great practitioners in their chosen fields. The substance
of every clinical site matters; these sites are usually selected for the life changing roles they are
expected to play in student’s lives. Students are expected to approach their practicum duties
solemnly. Clinical sites usually help form basics and foundations for students. I have been on my
clinical site for two weeks, I am more resolved than ever to become a reliable and dependable
PMHNP, being on this clinical assignment has exposed my mind to the strength of this program
and I look forward to a refreshing career.
