ASSIGNMENT 01
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
DUE DATE: 15 MAY
Complete all the answers in the space provided
1. State if the following statements are True = T or False=F
(15)
Statements True False
1 Physical education is considered the education of, by and through human
movement. It can mean different things to different people.
T
2 Fine motor abilities develop later and require the use of the smaller muscles in the
fingers, hands and feet for important actions like picking up an object or holding a
T
pencil
3 Sensory motor integration refers to a relationship between the sensory system
(nerves) and the motor system (muscles).
T
4 Perception has to do with the contact that the brain makes with the outside
world by means of data which is gathered through the senses
T
5 A child who is competent in movement is able to perform a variety of
much- needed fundamental motor skills.
T
6 Motor development is characterised as a clear pathway which occurs from birth
to adulthood. It is a continuous process that occurs over the aforementioned
T
period
7 Gross motor abilities require the child to use their arms, legs and large parts of
their body.
T
8 The early years therefore provides a window of opportunity for developing motor
skills and establishing lifelong patterns.
T
9 Movement activities are not ideal to use as they don’t assist
a learner’s mathematics and reading.

F
10 Physical abilities refer to physical fitness or motor fitness which includes
the development of spiritual, emotional, social and physical fitness
T
11 A retained rooting reflex may result in continued sensitivity and immature
responses to touch in and around the mouth area
T
12 Psychomotor development is divided into two components, namely
movement abilities and physical abilities
T
13 Reaching and grasping while on the tummy improves foot–eye coordination, visual
tracking and hand strength
F
14 The actions of lifting the head enables a baby to gain control of the head and
develop muscle tone which is a key component to be able to sit in a chair and also
T
gain control of the body.
15 If the vestibular system is developed properly learners may constantly fidget
while sitting
F
, 2. Name and discuss FOUR factors that influence the physical
development, abilities and fitness of the child in modern society? (10)
Children of today don’t do a lot of physical activities like riding bicycle and that influence
their development.
They spend the majority time of a day in front of the television or playing games and that
causes a lack of movement so they can’t develop physically.
They need to play in parks but these days it’s to unsafe for children to go to the park alone,
then they rather stay at home and do nothing so they can’t develop and improve abilities.
There is not a lot of movement activities in schools and that is also a factor because they
can’t improve abilities and fitness. Their physical development is lacking.
3. Tummy time is important for later learning. What is specifically developed
with regards to the body parts mentioned below. (5)
Arms Tummy time strengthen arms to help with reaching and crawling.
Hands For forming hand arches for fine motor skills.
Hips It develops the hip muscles.
Eyes It helps to form visual motor development and depth perception.
Legs The muscles for crawling are developed.
4. Briefly explain the most important motor abilities which are linked
to learning that developed during the rudimentary movement (10)
phase?
Sitting Sitting helps to develop balance when sitting in a chair and to developed muscle
tone. Through keeping balance, it helps to create a stable foundation to carry
out eye–hand and fine motor functions.
to maintain
Rolling Crossing the middle line is very important aspect in a child’s life and rolling is
thefirst attempt at it. It also helps them learn how to defy gravity. It helps with
optimal brain development of the connections between the hands, eyes etc.
Crawling It is the most important motor development achievement. It helps to develop
near and far vision. Crawling forms a base for spatial awareness, and that will
help with telling apart left from right as well as other things. Crawling also helps
with balance, spatial and visual system.
