1.1.1 a) A number plus eight equals thirteen:

+ 8 = 13

= 13 – 8

=5

∴ 5 + 8 = 13


b) Twice a number equals twelve:

+ = 12

2x = 12

= 12 ÷ 2

=6

∴ 6 + 6 = x (2) = 12


1.1.2) There are 7 more boys than girls in a class of 25. How many girls are in the class?

Let “Y” be the girls:

Y + (Y + 7) = 25
Y = girls and (Y + 7) = boys
2Y = 25 – 7

2Y = 18

Y=9

There are a total of 9 girls in the class.
