, Introduction
In March of 2020, our ward became ’the coronavirus ward’, which means that
since that time we have only patients who are affected by the COVID-19 virus.
This was a new situation for everyone because we needed to adjust to the new
circumstances. We had to read and learn the new policies, for example, how to
use personal protective equipment (PPE) and it was necessary to apply to
changes in various procedures. Nevertheless, we needed to read the hospital
emails before commencing every shift, and follow the daily changes on our
intranet, to keep ourselves up-to-date.
We tried to do our best and provide the physical and mental well-being of all the
patients. However, it was not easy to reassure them at these challenging times.
Particularly, because visiting the hospital was restricted at that time, so our
patients could not meet their family members and friends.
Picking a project
Once my manager received a touching feedback from parents of a young patient
by email, then printed it and put onto the staff room’s wall where everyone
could read it. It was written by a very thankful mother and father who had
written down their thoughts and emotions, including their fear about losing their
beloved son, then saying a big thank you for working hard to understand how
best to support their child who was unable to communicate verbally with us.
The parents were struggling with not being able to be in the hospital with their
loved one. Therefore, we supported this young man to use his tablet to stay in
touch with his parents daily.
This feedback gave me the topic of my project.
In June, I wrote an email to my assessor asking what she thinks about this topic.
She accepted this content and found it special related to the patients’ well-being.
After this, I decided that I am going to make a primary research which seeks
answers about how the patients contact relatives and friends during the COVID-
19 pandemic, while they are in the hospital.
