Hein tydens eerste pouse. Sy vra vir hom om met haar by Wimpy ‘n koffie te gaan drink om te
verduidelik. Sy benodig sy hulp. Hy stem teënsinnig in.
Juffrou Breytenbach is agterdogtig dat Lien gereeld skool mis.
Lien vertel Hein van Tibbey. Hy kry Lien jammer. Sy vra of Hein vir Tibbey ‘n rolstoel kan bou wat
op die teerpad kan werk en lank buite sal kan hou. Hy vra watter werk sy doen dat dit nodig is en
Lien ignoreer die vraag. Sy sê dat sy hom daarvoor sal betaal. Hein dink daaroor en sê hy sal
probeer. Hy betaal vir hulle koffie.
Lien voel senuweeagtig tussen die karre waar sy bedel
sedert Tibbey se ongeluk. Sy kyk ook uit vir Gordon, maar
wanner hy by haar verkeerslik stilhou ignoreer hy haar. Sy
verkies dit. Roos en Lien praat nie veel nie. Roos wil nie laat
weet waar sy tydens die ongeluk was nie, maar sy weet wat
gebeur het. Sy is ook beskermend oor Tibbey se hoek.
Johnny wou een dag daar staan net terwyl Tibbey weg was,
maar Roos het hom dadelik weggejaag. Die leë hoek maak
Lien hartseer.
Lien vertel vir Roos oor die karretjie wat sy vir Tibbey wil laat
maak. Sy hoop dat die mense wat in die area bedel almal
geld bymekaar kan sit om daarvoor te betaal. Roos sê dit
gaan nie gebeur met daai mense nie. Lien wil probeer.

Chapter 31 - the Corner without Entertainment
When her phone’s alarm goes off the following morning, Lien knows what to do. She waits for
Hein during the first break. She asks him to get a coffee with her at the Wimpy after school to
explain. She needs his help. He agrees reluctantly.
Mrs Breytenbach is getting suspicious that Lien keeps missing school.
She asks him to build a wheelchair for Tibbey that can drive over the tar road and last outside.
Hein asks what work Lien does that is necessary. She ignores the question. Lien says that she
will pay Hein for his work. He says he’ll try. Hein pays for their coffee.
Lien feels anxious around the cars where she stands and
begs since Tibbey’s accident. She is also looking out for
Gordon, but when he stops at her traffic light, he ignores
her. She prefers that. Roos and Lien don’t talk much. Roos
doesn’t want to let Lien know where she was during the
accident but knows what happened. She is also protective
over Tibbey’s spot. Johnny wanted to stand there one day
while Tibbey was gone, but Roos immediately chased him
away. The empty corner makes Lien sad.
Lien tells Roos about the car she wants to build for Tibbey.
She hopes that the people who beg in the area will all give
a bit of money to pay for it. Roos says that it will never
work with those people. Lien wants to try.

Hoofstuk 32 - Iets wat Picasso sou kon Bedink het
Lien sit by Hein terwyl hy planne vir Tibbey se karretjie maak. Dit lyk asof hy homself geniet
terwyl hy dit probeer uitwerk. Dit lyk vir Lien na iets wat Picasso sou uitgedink het. Lien wil weet
hoeveel dit gaan kos, en Hein sê hy weet nog nie.
Lien maak ‘n draai by die rolbalklub waar Tibbey soms in die tuine
gewerk het. Hy het daar verblyf in die buite kamer gehad toe hy nog
kon werk. Die bestuurder, James van Biljon, is ‘n besige man. Die
telefoon lui aanmekaar en Lien kry nie ‘n woord in totdat hy die foon
van die mikkie afhaal nie. Hy lyk ongeduldig en in ‘n slegte bui. Lien
pleit dat Tibbey weer daar kan slaap as hy die karre verniet oppas.
Hy sal met sy karretjie die karre kan oppas, en as iemand ‘n kar
probeer steel sal hy ‘n lawaai maak deur ‘n fluitjie te blaas. James
het nie tyd vir stories nie so Lien praat gou. Hy wil eers nie vir Tibbey
terug vat nie, maar Lien vra dat hy hom net ‘n maand kans gee. Hy
gee in.
Roos en Lien hou vri Johnny dop. Hy maak asof hy blind is. Dit
maak baie geld, al lieg hy. ‘n Vrou vra Lien of sy nie ‘n oordentlike
werk kan kry nie.
Chapter 32 - Something Picasso would have thought of
Lien sits with Hein during the break while he makes plans for Tibbey’s car. It seems like he is
enjoying himself while he tries to figure it out. To Lien, it looks like something Picasso would
have thought of. She asks how much it will cost and Hein does not know yet.
Lien makes a stop at the bowling club where Tibbey used to work in the gardens sometimes. He
lived in the outhouse while he could still work. The manager, James van Biljon, is a busy man.
The telephone rings constantly and Lien doesn’t get a word in until he disables the phone. He
looks impatient and is in a foul mood. Lien begs for Tibbey to sleep in the outhouse again if he
guards the cars for free. He will be able to watch the cars with his wheelchair and if someone
tries to steal a car, he will blow a whistle. James doesn’t have time for stories and so Lien
speaks quickly. At first, he doesn’t want to take Tibbey back, but Lien asks to give him a month’s
chance. He gives in.
Roos and Lien watch Johnny. He acts as though he’s blind. It makes a lot of money, even though
he is lying. A lady asks Line if she can’t find a proper job.
