Assignment 2

, Question 1:
1.1. “A curriculum needs to accommodate students’ diversity”

The author who made this statement means that the curriculum needs to have
flexible teaching strategies that can give all students access to learn cultural
diversity. In order to accommodate students’ diversity so that no one feels left
out is to include all the different kinds of students in literary text and the
curriculum. These texts should also be relevant to the life experiences of
students to help them understand and get the knowledge to help students to
understand cultural assumptions.

1.2. Diversity and Multiculturalism:

• Diversity:
o Is who we are and can be defined as the differences that exist among
individuals. Diversity is quantitative which means that you can calculate
all the differences. Diversity can most obviously be determined by race,
gender, and culture.
▪ For example in a diverse classroom there is 4 different races
(black, white, Indian, coloured), female and male students and
all of them come from different backgrounds and the poetry was
a poem about all the different races in South Africa “the rainbow
nation”.
• Multiculturalism:
o Multiculturalisms are an evolving process of the co-existence of diverse
cultures. It is when multiple cultural traditions or racial groups are not
only accepted in society but also everyone in a society has equal rights
and opportunities. Not one is feeling left out.
▪ For example in the school library books were displayed as a way
to attract a diverse groups of visitors. There are front pages with
white people, black people, coloured and Indians and Chinese,
etc.
