“the problem of what to do with the past would have to continue on in the future”

Looksmart has spent most his life trying to escape the memory of Grace. The thought of her brings
about a fresh surge of hatred.

Richard’s dementia not only causes him to forget their past, but it seems to have altered his
personality.

Fishing trip

Richard is haunted by the memory of Rachel

The farmhouse itself holds memories

Their memories are so misaligned that Patricia begins to doubt her own recollections, and wonders
whether her memory of Looksmart is, in fact, an amalgamation of a number of different memories
of different boys.

“Such a long time ago”

It is unlikely that Patricia forgot the attack on Grace, but she does not remember Looksmart being
their at the time.

Beauty knows truth but holds it back. She gives “a small amount of truth”

“it all comes back to her” (Patricia)

Beauty protects Patricia from the truth of Grace

“Is not the full story”

Patricia starts to remember her version of the incident the more they talk about it. “The more she
speaks her version of events, the clearer they become”

Patricia asks Beauty about the events and “this time [she] would like the truth”

“can still remember”

Grace’s truth will always be unknown

Richard’s memory of most things is blurred

For Patricia, the past is in the past. For Looksmart, the past is still very much in the present

The fault lines of memory and truth are once again revealed as Patricia and Looksmart interrogate
Beauty about what she remembers from the day Grace was killed. Here’s another version of the
same story is being drawn out and Looksmart, for one, seems determined to prove that this version
of the truth aligns with his own. Looksmart puts words into Beauty’s mouth.

Beauty was supposed to admit to the truth she had never before uttered

“she is afraid of too much truth spilling out”

Looksmart wants Patricia to understand what he understands. He wants her to be sorry “for the rest
of [her] days”.
