, An overview of Tesco- History
• 1919- Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen. This is because he would sell groceries from a stall
in East London. Jack left the Royal Flying Corp when the great war finished and used the rest
of his money to buy stock for his first day . He believed that everyone who shops should have
food that can be purchased at an affordable price. Once Jack had completed his first day of
selling a profit of £1 was made on sales of £4.
• 1924- Tesco had sold their own- brand product Tesco- tea. Jack guaranteed this would bring
unmatched value. This took place before the business was referred to as Tesco. Tesco’s name
can be broken down into the initials of TE Stockwell as he was a colleague in the firm of tea
providers plus CO that are the first two letters of Jack’s surname.
• 1929- The first store of Tesco was opened by Jack Cohen in Burnt Oak , Edgware , North
London. Tesco sold goods and their first branded product which was Tesco-tea.
• 1934- Jack had a set amount of money that he bought aside as he wanted to build a new
head quarters plus warehouse. This warehouse that was bought was the first modern one in
the country.
• 1937- At this point there were many Tesco stores across London plus slightly making its way
into the suburbs of different countries.
