Exam 2 covers chapters 11-15 in the following text:
Hogan-Quigley, B., Palm, M. L., & Bickley, L. (2017). Bates’ nursing guide to physical examination
and history taking (2nd ed.). Wolters Kluwer.
Although an exam question may come from any part of chapters 11-15, the student should
focus on the following:
Chapter 11
o Anatomy and physiology of the eye
o The cranial nerves affecting the eyes and the function of each
o The tests used to assess the eyes (name, how it is performed, why it is used)
o The names, definitions, and assessment findings of diseases and abnormalities of the
eye
o How to properly document an eye exam
Chapter 12
o Anatomy and physiology of the 3 compartments of the ear
o The tests used to assess the ears and hearing (name, how it is performed, why it is used)
o The names, definitions, and assessment finding of diseases and abnormalities of the ears
and how to treat them
o The names, definitions and assessment findings of diseases and abnormalities of the
nose and paranasal sinuses and how to treat them
Chapter 13
o Names and characteristics of breath sounds
o Names and characteristics of adventitious breath/lung sounds and associated diseases
o Deformities of the thorax
o The diseases associated with dyspnea
Chapter 13/14
o The diseases associated with chest pain
Chapter 14
o Anatomy and physiology of the heart
o Heart sounds (both normal and abnormal): causes, meaning, and where they can be
auscultated
o Risk factors (modifiable and nonmodifiable) for coronary heart disease and hypertension
Chapter 14/15
o The various pulses and the physiology and pathophysiology associated with them
o Edema causes, assessment, and findings
Chapter 15
o Peripheral vascular diseases causes, assessment, and findings

o Equipment needed for an examination and how to use it
