The DNP program was launched in response to a call for new knowledge in the face of a rapidly changing health care environment. The DNP curricula purpose is to build on traditional master's programs by providing education in evidence-based practice, system leadership, and quality improvement, among other critical areas (Auerbach et al., 2015). Academic nursing leaders in 2004 supported Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) preparation movement to DNP by 2015 (Auerbach et al., 2015). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has supported the DNP positions. The position was attained after the assessment of current and anticipated health needs based on the current value-based environment. The DNP is designed for nurses seeking a terminal degree in nursing practice and provides an alternative to research-focused doctoral programs. The Current State DNP Currently, 348 DNP programs are enrolling students at nursing schools nationwide and an extra 98 DNP new programs are still in planning stages whereby 48 are post-master’s and the rest post-baccalaureate programs (Redman et al., 2015). Further, DNP programs are currently available in 50 states of the United States together with District of Columbia, while the states with most programs have at least ten programs such as Florida, California, Illinois, and New York. From the year 2017 to 2018, the student’s enrollment number in DNP programs registered an increase of about 17.84 % and 15.84 % of DNP graduates (Redman et al., 2015). Additionally, employers have rapidly realized the specific contribution of DNP professionals in the arena of REFLECTION ON THE DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE (DNP) 8 practice and the demand for these DNP-prepared experts continues to grow. At present 286 DNP programs are already endorsed by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The Future State of DNP DNP may be the solution for provider shortages in the future since the program has been producing a large number of competent graduates ready for the current advanced nursing job market. Since the number of graduates has been increasing over the years, if the same rate will be used in practicing enrollment, the shortage of advanced practice nurses will increase tremendously (Williams & Howard, 2017). Even though there is the existence of several challenges whenever educational values are raised, the AACN is dedicated to operating with clinicians, policymakers, faculty, practice and academic leaders, inter-professional colleagues to solve those concerns in efforts to advance DNP as public change health needs. Williams & Howard (2017) suggest that AACN recommends academic nursing continue to emphasize leadership to formulate future employees as it addresses the barriers to the full execution of the DNP for all APRNs and enhances the necessity for demanding research on DNP-prepared providers’ outcomes. How DNP- prepared APNs will assist with Transformative Healthcare and Help Solve Complex Health Problems Clinical healthcare demand for providers is constantly growing the demanding need for the gap that is growing for providers. The doctoral prepared APN can help fill this growing gap for health care systems. Health professionals have been looking forward to doctorate graduates’ preparation with new advanced clinical competencies (Staffileno, Murphy & Carlson, 2017). DNP-prepared APN's will provide such clinical competencies including a strong emphasis on REFLECTION ON THE DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE (DNP) 9 safety and quality, genomics and genetics, clinical data analysis, research, and inter-professional care. The collaboration of these competencies with others such as health's social determinants, the population of health contributes to the prospects of DNP programs and reinforces the need for practicing doctoral education. Advantages of having DNP degree There is current research for the value of DNP-prepared professionals, developing for the healthcare systems that are dedicated to assessing providers' impact being a master’s degree APN versus a DNP provider. DNP will ensure graduate practitioners are both experts and leaders in evidence-based practice (Pritham & White, 2016). The DNP-prepared APNs will improve healthcare results through facilitating the transition of the current evidence-based education into the nursing practice. The DNP-prepared APN is also at the highest level of her degree. In conclusion, DNP-prepared APNs can apply advanced leadership skills in evaluation, planning for, changes implementation to improve quality of care and reconfigure models of care delivery in a highly volatile compensation environment. Further, DNP degree is appropriate for a practitioner’s career path since it offers the opportunity to specialize in a nursing area within the selected APRN role and or assume management and leadership roles in health settings, which is the level for higher salaries and more opportunities to make tremendous contributions to the clinical profession.
