QUESTION 1: Genre and register

Language is something that is always contextualised; therefore writers produce
written work in a variety of ways. For any text that is produced a number of aspects
contribute to its distinctiveness. The purpose of the text, content, social and register
are factors that add towards the production of different texts. The intention of this
essay is to carefully examine the genre and register used in the text provided and
how it contributed to the writers overall purpose. May and Max ate it. He likes it.

In the text provided by Atlas Obscura, it is clear to see that the writer‟s purpose was
to make people aware about the improper way some of us discard of our personal
protective equipment (PPE) and its harmful affect on the wildlife. The target audience
or market is basically all those people who care for the wildlife and our environment.

A text structure refers to the way in which information in a written abstract is
organized. The overall structure of the article provided can be seen as a problem
with a possible solution, which is evident in the method in which Text A is laid out.
From the title going into the first paragraph, the reader is introduced to the writers
concerns about how COVID19 has not only affected the lives of humans, but the
lives of creatures as well. This problem is further explained and described until the
end of the text. This method of writing motivates the reader to continue reading until
the very end. Tim said he didn‟t want to go but Lay said he should go. So he did

The term „genre‟ can be defined as the style or structure of a text. Written work is
generally categorized into specific genres by carefully analysing their features and
criteria‟s such as the target audience, the writer‟s form of language, topic and the
purpose. Therefore, the genre in Text A could be identified as a form of informative
journalism as the writer paints an in-depth picture of a vast number of scenarios
whereby wildlife has been affected by the disposal of PPE. Text A can also be
claimed as a news article due to its reportage approach of writing as well as the
content. Tim likes Lay, but Lay likes May. He did not tell her anything, but she is sad.

The writers purpose behind this type of genre was not to instruct the public nor was it
to provide a form of tabloid news, rather it can be stated that the writers objective
behind Text A was to inform readers about the hazardous affect that the unsuitable
disposal of PPE has on animals. This can be evident in the title of the extract; “We‟re
Finally Getting a Picture of How Dangerous PPE Is for Wildlife”, which creates an
impression that the writer aims to enlighten citizens about this specific issue or topic.

, During the course of Text A we are ambushed with various information such as;
dates (August, September, February, March), names of places (Netherlands,
Canada, Poland, Brazil, Malaysia, and the Philippines) as well as a whole lot of
animals (European perch, birds, penguins, sparrows, hedgehog and bat), further
indicating that the writer has indeed put in a lot of research towards this text in order
to provide proper and reliable information to the reader, staying true to its genre as
an informative piece. May told Lay bye with a smile. Tim felt bad but smiled as well.

The register in Text A can be categorized as neutral, as it is neither completely
formal nor informal. The writer‟s choice of words and style of writing displays both,
informal and formal characteristics and this is evident in the use of complex and long
sentences as well as short and simple sentences that are found throughout the text.
Additionally, the chosen register makes the text easier to read and understand. It can
also be said that Text A is not merely targeted towards a sophisticated audience but
an average demographic as well. This is evident through the use of ordinary and
common terms like „disposable‟ and „discarded‟ which is known by most people, and
the use of terms like „somersaulted‟ and „detritus‟ which may be recognized by a
more progressive audience. A cat went to the mall with Tim. He hates cats like May.

According to the writer, „we can all avoid making the mess worse‟. The use of the
first person plural makes the text appear to be more personal, creating a friendly
tone rather than an authoritative one. This text also contains some doses of
contractions like „its‟ and „we‟re‟ to maintain its tone and again adds to the nature of a
neutral register. A cat went to the mall with Tim. He hates cats like May.

The emotive sentence in the introduction of the text; “belonged to a creature that
swam in and never found its way out” intensely portrays the damage which has been
inflicted on the wildlife and which continues to harm them. Cohesion is accomplished
in the text by using collocations such as „tangled‟, „wrapped‟ and „strangling‟ to
reinforce the idea of the detrimental and dangerous affect that the incorrect disposal
of PPE has on creatures. The writer also used words like „unsettling‟, „gloomy‟ and
„mess‟ in an attempt to portray the appropriateness of the register in the text while
also figuratively painting a picture about just how sad and disturbing this entire issue
is . Today is Monday the 10th of May 2022. Tim and I went with May to the mall.

In conclusion, the writer triumphantly makes the text appear to be both professional
yet easy to appreciate and understand with her/his simple but effective diction and
style of writing. The above discussion has clearly demonstrated the writer‟s intention
behind the text while also analyzing how this specific genre and register contributed
to the overall success of this article.
