Surrogacy
By_________
“Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction where intended
parents work with a gestational surrogate who will carry and care for
their baby(ies) until birth. Intended parents use surrogacy to start or
grow their families when they can't do so on their own”. In other words,
Surrogate is an artificially inseminated woman have a child for another
woman. “Surrogacy occurs when the surrogate mother is impregnated
through artificial insemination with the sperm of the husband from the
couple who have contracted with her”.
This practice surged in the world during the mid-1970’s, raising
social, moral, and legal problems not met before. Some infertile couples
were ready to take advantage of this nontraditional form of
reproduction. On the other hand, doctors, lawyers, and legislators have
tried to keep up with the expanding fertility technology.
In the pasts, a 48-year-old South African gave birth to her own
three grandchildren because she, named Pat Anthony, acted as
surrogate mother for her 25-year-old daughter, whose uterus was
removed three years ago. “Mrs. Anthony was implanted with four of her
daughter’s eggs that were fertilized in a laboratory with sperm from her
son-in-law. The triplets, two boys and a girl, were delivered by cesarean
section at a Johannesburg hospital.”
