The Cardiovascu lar System The Heart: All truth, not AFIB Diana Sears The Heart: Fun Facts • The heart is a hollow, cone-shaped organ that pumps around 6,000 quarts of blood in a day • Our heart works in a synchronized spontaneous and independent nature • Allows our blood to supply our bodies with necessary nutrients and electrolytes. • The heart is the only muscle in human body which does the maximum amount of physical work • Generates around 1-5 watts of power. The Heart: Anatomy • Muscular organ that contains four cavities. • It’s enclosed within the inferior mediastinum • On each side of the heart rests the lungs • The base posterior aspect is where the great vessels of the body emerge The Heart: Cardiac Muscle Cell • Major Function- contract so the heart can pump blood. • Cardiac myocytes contract automatically without neuro stimulation • Electrical impulses produced from the SA node stimulates the myocytes • They must be synchronized for efficient pumping. The Heart: Walls and Coverings • The heart wall has three layers: outer pericardium, middle myocardium, and inner endocardium. • The pericardium- a double walled sac that protects the heart by reducing friction. • The myocardium- thick layer that is made mostly of cardiac muscle tissue in ring-like arrangements that contracts. • The thin layer is the endocardium- made up of epithelium and connective tissue that line the chamber. - Aorta tell you more - The Heart: Chambers, Valves & Circulation • The chambers are divided longitudinally by the septum. • The top two chambers, atria- are divided by a structure called the interatrial septum. • Two lower chambers, ventricles, are also divided by a similar structure called interventricular septum. • The superior atria receive blood returning to the heart. • The ventricles receive blood from the atria and then pump it out to the arteries. • -You make my heart have premature ventricular contractions-
