,Chapter 5 - Programme and Project
Support Office (PPSO)
• The principle of having a support office for project-related work is
widely accepted and it also covers the terms project support office
project office and programme office.
• The terms tend to be used interchangeably to a certain extent and
precise definition of what they cover depends on the organization
within which they operate.
• As organizations began to use project-oriented structures more
widely, and the number of projects increased substantially, the
PPSO became more of a permanent fixture and helped to service
number of projects rather than working exclusively on one.
, • PPSOs have their own management structure, independen
of the project managers. This in turn led to PPSOs having a
reporting role involving the collation of individual project
progress reports and the assembly and distribution of thi
information to management.
• PPSO has moved from a purely administrative and support
role to, in some cases, being at the center of the control a
direction of the organization’s project and programme
portfolio.
