Time: The time in which this book takes place is quite difficult to determine. Because
everything is actually exactly the same as it is now, only there is something in the book that
we don’t have: that you will be called that you will die within twenty-four hours. And this
could be possible in the distant future , but I don’t really think that something like that
would be for real. So that is why it’s hard to estimate when this book happened because it’s
a fan fiction.
The whole book takes place in a time frame of 24 hours
Place: New York
Main Characters: Mateo and Rufus
Summary
Mateo Torrez is 18 years old when he receives a call from Death-Cast. He is told that he has
only 24 hours left to live. His father has been in the hospital (he is in a coma) for a few
weeks. And he is to afraid to tell his best friend, because her boyfriend just passed away and
she is now a single mother. He also doesn’t want to spend his last day alone and he decides
to download the app: Last Friend. A app where you only can sign up if you are a Decker (a
person that just had a phone call that they will die within 24 hours) or if you want to help a
Decker. He gets reactions really quick, but there some creeps in between.
Rufus Emeterio is almost 18 years old when he receives a call from Death-Cast. He’s just
about to beat someone up. His best friends Tagoe and Malcolm are shocked by the phone
call.
My boys, Tagoe and Malcolm, are no longer cheering on the beat-down. They’re
dead quiet and I’m waiting for this punk Peck’s phone to go off too.
Rufus also calls his ex-girlfriend Aimée and they all get together and tell him why they will
miss him. Peck (Aimées boyfriend) secretly called the police on Rufus. So Rufus decided to
download the Last Friend app, and to spend his last day with someone from that app,
because he doesn’t want to endanger his family and friends. And then his eye falls on Mateo
and he decides to send him a message.
And that is how Mateo and Rufus come into contact with each other. They chat a bit and
after a short video call they decide to meet up. Rufus is coming to Mateo
When Mateo and Rufus meet, it really seems to click between them and they decide to
spend their last day together.
Mateo really doesn’t want to leave the house, because he doesn’t like people around him.
He also says this:
No matter how we choose to live, we both die at the end. (blz. 79)
I think ‘they both die at the end’ is a magnificent book that concludes heavy questions about
death and the meaning of a life well-lived.
