My community health nursing diagnosis is increased risk for infection from COVID19 among older adult population related to increased risk factors and multiple health problems as demonstrated by more severe symptoms of illness and death from COVID19. B1. Health Inequity or Disparity Older adults are at a higher risk for severe symptoms and death resulting from COVID19 for several reasons. Older adults experience a greater number of chronic diseases and disabilities as well as immune dysfunction. (D’Adamo, 2020) Additionally, older adults may not have access to a regular source of medical care, leading to unmet health care needs, and under use of clinical and preventive services. Although most older adults have Medicare, this only provides a basic level of access to the health care system. Older adults who do not supplement Medicare with private coverage are at the greatest risk of having unmet health care needs. Studies have shown that older adults on Medicare and public or Medicare only coverage were twice as likely to have unmet medical needs than those with Medicare and private coverage. (Cohen, 1997)
