Book title: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone
Author: J.K. Rowling
Number of pages: 223

Type of story:
It’s a fantasy novel. The book is about Harry Potter who turns out to be a magician instead of
a normal person (called Muggles). The book is about the magical world, about spells,
poisons, moving pictures and Quidditch. And also other magical gadgets like:
 Wands: Personalized, magical sticks;
 Broomsticks: used in the game of Quidditch but is also used as transportation
 Remembrall: Orb that turns red if a wizard or witch has forgotten something;
 The Sorting Hat: Magically determines in which house (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff,
Ravenclaw, Slytherin) a new student is going to live. The hat belonged to Godric
Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts.
 The Owls: The mail messengers for wizards and witches

A summary:
Harry Potter lives at the Dursleys, after the death of his parents. Voldemort (a dangerous
magician) murdered them. He also puts a killing curse on baby Harry but it reverses leaving a
scar on Harry’s forehead. Voldemort is defeated.
Harry lives in the cupboard under the stairs and is bullied by Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and
their son Dudley. One day Harry starts receiving strange letters and is rescued by a giant
man. When he is eleven years old Harry goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry. In the beginning of the year the students are told by Professor Dumbledore (the
headmaster) not to enter the third floor corridor. But Harry and his friends find out that the
Philosopher’s stone (produces the Elixir of Life which gives immortality) is stored behind this
corridor and that someone is trying to steal it. Harry enters the forbidden corridor and
passes barriers (set by the teachers of Hogwards to protect the stone). Voldemort who
shares the body of Professor Quirrel (The Dark Arts teacher) can’t get past all barriers.
Dumbledore can’t pass the last one, the Mirror of the Erased. In this mirror you see what
you desire. The person who wants the Stone for himself, not for the powers, can see where
the stone is. Quirrel can’t see where it is but when Harry looks in the mirror he finds the
stone in his pocket. Harry and Quirrel fight about the stone. When Harry starts to lose,
Dumbledore comes to help and in the end Harry is able to overcome the Dark Wizard
Voldemort.

The Main Characters:

 Harry Potter: He is eleven years old and a bit skinny. He has a scar in the shape of a
lightning-bolt on his forehead, dark hair and glasses. Harry Potter is a half-blood
wizard and the son of James and Lily Potter. He becomes a student at Hogwarts and
lives in the Gryffindor house. He is also called ‘ The boy who lived’. He is a wizard that
becomes famous for beating Voldemort.
