Around the early 900s CE, there was a new group of nomadic Muslims that lived in the east
called the Turks. Around the early eleventh century, a group of Turks moved out of Central Asia
and into the Middle East. Groups of these people served as mercenaries with their leaders that
were called sultans. Around 1071 CE, one group called the Seljuk Turks faced off against
Romanus IV in a battle called The Battle of Manzikert. Romanus IV was killed, and his army
was slaughtered. After the Seljuks won, they headed south and took over the Holy Land and
Jerusalem. News about the Seljuks spread to Pope Urban II and a meeting was called. The Pope
formed an army and they head to Jerusalem to fight in a Holy War.

Popular preachers such as Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless gained followers to fight
who were from France and Germany and were among the poor. “They believed that they were
witnessing the last days of mankind and that a messianic figure would soon rise to destroy the
"infidel" Muslims and free the Holy Land.” (Acrobatiq, 2017) Many people left their homes to
head to Jerusalem to fight. The Pope told the people that if they were killed during the Holy War,
they would go directly to heaven. (Acrobatiq, 2017)

The leader of the Umayyad dynasty was Mu'awiya, who was a sharp businessman and a
skilled administrator. He developed the first Muslim navy which defeated the Byzantines in the
Mediterranean Sea. He often bribed his enemies rather than challenging them and said that wars
