Question 1:
1. Learner-centred approach in teaching EMS places learners at the centre of the teaching and
learning experience, learners take control of their own learning with the support of the teacher.
Your new colleague, Kagiso, ask for your advice on using learner-centered teaching approach,
particularly, Co-operative learning techniques.
Explain to her the following techniques to use and implement in her classroom.
a. Student-teams achievement divisions (STAD) (10)
b. Group investigation (GI) method (10)
c. Jigsaw method (10)
A – STAD STRATEGY:
First off Kagiso needs to understand what the STAD strategy is before she can implement it
in her classroom. Student teams-achievement divisions (STAD) is a Cooperative
learning strategy in which small groups of learners with different levels of cognitive ability
work together to accomplish a shared learning goal.
She can use the STAD strategy in her classroom in the following manner.
Groups would be formed based on academic performances of results as high-
middle- and low achievers.
• Kagiso needs to present to the whole class the content that is to be covered using
whatever teaching method she prefers. During this stage Kagiso needs to explain the
content in dept to the students and give them an opportunity to ask her questions
before she divides them into groups from high- middle- and low academic achievers.
• Kagiso must have worksheets available to give to the learners, so she can make sure
they understand the content that she has just taught them. The teams then work
together to complete the worksheets.
• After a period, every member in each team is expected to have mastered the
content. Kagiso must then have individual quizzes which are about the content
learners have learned. They are not allowed to help one another.
• After the quizzes have been answered by the students Kagiso must collect then and
mark them for an individual grading mark for each student and not as a whole.
Kagiso can take the following steps to implement STAD in her EMS class (EXAMPLE):
• Divide the students into groups, each group must have at least 5 students.
• Give the groups a topic, for example, the economic environment, as a research project.
• Provide a task that must be completed.
• Provide a specific assignment to each group to be completed.
• Seeing that it is a research project give learners at least a week to plan, complete
and submit their assignment. The learners may use their textbook or the internet
wherever they can find information that is relevant.
