ROSIE COLEMAN
AC 3.1. Plan a campaign for change relating to crime (10 marks)
Aims:
The primary aim of my campaign is to raise awareness for domestic abuse victims and help any current
victims feel empowered to come forward and bring themselves to safety. Domestic abuse is a crime that
goes widely unreported, primarily due to the victim’s fear of their abuser but also due to a lack of public
interest. Many people do not feel as if they should or can report someone if they believe them to be abusing
their partner as they do not feel it is their problem. With my campaign, I hope to express the fact that even if
people feel alone and isolated like Mrs S does because perhaps their abuser is keeping them from seeing
their friends, they are never alone as there is always someone at the end of a phone line or on an online chat
to tell them about their suffering. I will also hope to raise awareness for domestic abuse charities like Refuge
and Women's Aid as they help women or any sufferers of this abuse.

Target audience:
I am aiming my campaign at women aged 16-74 as statistically, women (of all ages) are more likely to
become victims of domestic violence; in March 2020, it was estimated that for the year ending March 2019
1.6 million women aged 16 to 74 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year. This is a devastating
statistic but it is one that I hope will resonate with many women and encourage them to support this
campaign.

Objectives:
In order to achieve that aim of my campaign, I will create merchandise in the form of t-shirts as they are bold
ways of promoting the campaign and spreading awareness for the cause. They also appeal to a wide range
of demographics but especially women. I will also create posters to distribute in local towns. I will also hold
talks in secondary schools as domestic violence can start often as young as sixteen years old and therefore
it is important that people, mainly girls, of that age know some of the signs and where to go if they see them.
Finally, I will create a social media page on Instagram and Twitter as these are sites which are used by
millions of people but very often teenage and young adult women who will benefit from seeing the
information about domestic abuse in their feed.

Finance:
To raise funds for my campaign, I will create a GoFundMe page as the link for which can be circulated on
social media which is a guaranteed way of spreading information far and wide quickly. Also a GoFundMe
page will allow me to outline the aims of the campaign and explain to any potential donors why they should
donate and what good this would do. Additionally, I will write to the local council and tell them about the need
for funding for this campaign. I will express to them the necessity of such a campaign, using the
aforementioned statistics to substantiate my arguments. As a result, I would hope that they would offer some
funding as they will see the importance of the campaign and the need for them to keep the citizens within
their council safe. This money will be used for merchandise and posters. For 150 branded t-shirts, it would
cost £240 which I would then sell for £10 each, gaining back my profits as they are all sold. If the t-shirts are
a success, I will have the money from the sales to contribute towards further orders of these shirts. The aim
is to get as many people wearing the t-shirts as possible as this means that more people will be seeing the
logo and slogan. It is especially effective if people like Mrs S see these shirts when she is going about any
daily errands as she will feel less alone and more supported by people like herself. I will also use the funding
obtained from the crowdfunding page and the local council to produce posters; to print £500 posters, it would
cost £20 which is £0.04 per poster which is a very good price considering how effective they can be because
of how quickly and widely they can be distributed. The budget for my campaign will be £1000 as my
campaign is relatively small-scale and this is also relative to the costs of the materials I will be utilising
throughout my campaign.

Resources:
In order for my campaign to run smoothly and effectively, I will need volunteers to help distribute posters and
also help run the social media accounts. I would aim to use local companies for merchandise and posters as

, it is a local campaign and also this will lower my outgoing and therefore I can donate more to any domestic
abuse charities to help with the work they do to help victims. If not local businesses, I will use online sites to
produce the materials that ensure I get the products for a good price and of a high quality.

Methods:
One method I am using in my campaign is social media; social media sites are effective in campaigns for
change because they are free to use and are used actively by 3.6billion people globally. Also, it is very easy
for a post to go ‘viral’ especially if shared with people with lots of followers. If things go viral there is more of a
chance it is addressed in mainstream media like newspapers and radio. A significant way these things go
viral is if they are shared by influencers and importantly ones what actually personally resonate with the
campaign; if this campaign were to be shared Love Island star Malin Andersson, her 705,000 followers would
trust it to be a good campaign as she speaks openly about the fact her ex-boyfriend was abusive towards her
and is a avid ambassador of Refuge Charity. Another method I will use to gain support for my campaign is
print media (posters) as it is effective due to being informative but engaging. Posters can also be distributed
quickly and if bold lettering and colours are used, they are very eye-catching. A further method I will utilise is
merchandise in the form of t-shirts. Merchandise promotes the campaign logo and also helps gain back any
money spent on the campaign. Proceeds for buying t-shirts can be donated to domestic abuse charities to
help the good work they are doing. My target audience of women are more likely to wear charity t-shirts
however, if a man were to wear a Don’t Suffer In Silence t-shirt it would be much more of a significant
statement and would get more people to notice it, therefore engaging more support for and interest in the
campaign. Finally, I will also arrange to do talks in local secondary schools about what the campaign is
looking to do. It is important that teenagers are able to spot the signs of domestic abuse whether it be within
their own relationships or in those of their friends and family. It is also necessary that they know the signs of
a healthy relationship so that it is more obvious to them if they are in an unhealthy one. Knowing that there is
a selection of charities and helplines available to them will be incredibly beneficial to them should they ever
end up in an abusive relationship but do not feel as if they can talk to their loved ones.

Timescales:
My campaign should take place over the duration of six months. For the first 2 weeks of my campaign, I will
spend this time researching domestic abuse in the UK and in the local Kent area. I can do this by simply
looking up the Crime Survey for England and Wales to see the statistics on domestic abuse or by contacting
Kent police stations to individually ask them about the data they have on domestic abuse in their
jurisdictions. Once I have obtained all or any information I felt I needed, from weeks 3 to 4 I will begin to
design my campaign materials, choosing a name, slogan and logo. I need the logo and name to be bold and
memorable and in a bright color like red because this will stand out to people. Once I have all of my
merchandise, I will begin to distribute posters; I will (with the council’s permission) distribute them in the high
streets and in shopping centres as these are places where a lot of people will see them, particularly and
potential victims may see them and then seek help from the information provided on the posters. Distribution
of posters should only take 5 days to complete as I intend to hand out 100 posters per day and if they appear
to be effective, I can easily order more for a very small price to distribute after 2 months. Over the course of 2
months, I hope to give talks in 30 secondary schools across Kent during assemblies or any time the schools
decide is appropriate.

Justification:
By raising women and the public’s awareness of domestic abuse, you would hope that the rates of people
being in long term abusive relationships would decrease. By running the campaign I hope to make sure
people know they are not alone even if they do feel trapped or excluded from the world, there are people
here for them that want to help. Also, hopefully, more people will feel able to come forward to the police or to
trusted friends and family so that they can be brought to safety and their abuser to justice. It is important that
people are aware of the campaign especially from a young age so that if they do indeed end up in this kind of
relationship in their future, they can remember where to go or who is useful to call.
