,1. INTRODUCTION (Reina Mebius, 6th September)
• Cells of the immune system
• Activation of Innate & Adaptive immune system
• Complement
• B- & T cell receptors
• MHC class I and II presentation
• T cell activation
• B cell activation
• Antibody effector functions
• Mucosal immune system

CELLS OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Hematopoiesis:

Differences of the two arms of the immune response:

Innate cells can distinguish “self” and “nonself”. Macrophage receptors recognize the cell-surface
carbohydrates of bacterial cells but not those of human cells. NK cell receptors recognize changes
at the surface of human cells that are caused by viral infection.

2

, Receptors involved in phagocytosis and signaling:

The adaptive immune system starts in a secondary lymphoid organ. Lymph node is a secondary
lymphoid organ. Via the blood, cells travel through the arteries so that they can see APC that present
antigens of bacteria. When they recognize this, they can start the response of cytokines etc. If they
don’t recognize anything, the go again to the blood, so they keep circulating.
