CLOTHING
Fashion
 what is currently popular
 continuously evolving/changing
 style accepted by a specific group of people at a given time and place

The fashion cycle
 The introductory/innovation phase
Fashions are distributed to those retailers whose customers desire the
very latest fashions. The price of these goods are high because of the
initial production costs and because of the risk that the style might not be
accepted

 Growth/rise stage
During this stage the fashion becomes popular. More garments are
manufactured and sold. This causes a decline in the selling price which
stimulates sales even further

 Maturity peak stage
This is the stage where the fashion reaches its peak and many people are
wearing it. How long it stays in this stage depends on how quickly
consumers become bored with the style and start looking for a new style

 Decline stage
People become bored and fewer people wear the fashion. During this
stage prices are reduced and discounts are offered because retailers and
manufacturers want to get rid of their stock

 Obsolescence stage
The fashion disappears. A new fashion is already on
its way.

Three fashion stages

High fashion * beginning of fashion trend
* has an exclusive appeal
* period that it lasts varies
* fashion leaders are viewed as being daring
Mass acceptance * most people wear the fashion
* lasts longer than high fashion
* acceptance of fashion is dependent on
advertising
Obsolescent fashion * people start to notice new items
* fashion starts to look dowdy

,Definitions
Classic: continuing or lasting. They are continually accepted because they are
timeless and meet the needs of many people
Fad: They do not make a lasting impression on fashion trends. It is in high
demand for a short period of time and is quickly accepted by a relatively small
group of people. The main characteristic of a fad is the speed with which it
moves. The reason why fads last for a short period of time is because they are
usually flashy, poorly designed, easily available and extreme
Avergage/standard: These trends start, grow, evolve & decline gradually.
Hemlines lift or drop slightly from one season to the next. The shapes of skirts,
collars, trousers etc. change gradually, bringing about a minimal but constant
change in the silhouette. Consumers determine the lifespan of a standard
fashion trend. They last between 2 & 3 years
Style: A style is characterised by certain lines or details. A style remains a style
whether in or out of fashion. A style only becomes a fashion when it is accepted
by a large number of people
Taste: an individual's opinion of what is appropriate or beautiful. Because of the
subjectiveness of this judgement, standards of taste are not universal

Haute couture: refers to new garment styles. It is created to inspire fashion
changes and has several identifiable characteristics:
 it is very expensive
 exclusiveness of the design, the quality of the fabric, and the excellence
of workmanship.
 it is not mass produced
 remains high fashion only until it is accepted by a large number of
people
 as soon as high fashion gains acceptance and is mass produced, it
becomes fashion
 these are exclusive, original designs

Trends: Fashion is always changing in the direction of a trend, trends are
constantly
evolving. It is the general direction that a fashion silhouette takes

Silhouette: A silhouette is the outline of your body or of a garment. The lines of
the garment form the silhouette, which you can see from a distance, even before
you notice the detail of the style. Only three basic silhouettes exist
 the cylinder
 the triangle
 the bell

Design: Design is the individual interpretation of or variation in a style. The line,
colour and
texture together create a style that has its own distinctive image and silhouette

, Couture: an establishment devoted to the creation of fashion where the
designer develops
his own ideas rather than trying to meet the requirements of individual
customers

Fast Fashion: The clothing collections are based on the most recent fashion
trends
Presented at Fashion Week in both the spring and the autumn of every year.
These trends
are designed and manufactured quickly and inexpensively to allow the ‘ordinary’
consumer
to buy the clothing styles at a lower price

Mass Fashion: Clothing that is produced in large quantities e.g. Ready to wear
garments in mass. Cheaper fabrics are creatively used to produce affordable
fashion. It uses simple production techniques and can therefore be sold at
cheaper prices
