Pathophysiology: Hypertension (HTN) is having a systolic blood pressure that is greater than 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mmHg. There are two classifications of HTN, primary or essential and secondary. People with renal and adrenal disorders are at risk for Secondary HTN. The sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system are mechanisms involved in maintaining blood pressure, a disfunction in the sympathetic nervous system can cause in increase in cardiac output, resulting in HTN, as the sympathetic nervous system becomes overworked.
