Task Scenario
You have been asked to create a database for ‘Dragon Ford Garage’, a garage specialising in
repairs of Ford cars, based in Newport. The company’s database records information about
the customers, mechanics and repairs.
Customers are categorised by title - Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms
Mechanics work between 1 and 7 hours per day on any repair
Mechanic hours are charged out to customers at £38.50 an hour
There is a sample data set to be found on Moodle called Dragon Ford Sample Data. Use this
file only.
Activity 1: Database relationships screenprint (45 minutes)
Study the sample data.
Create an efficient database structure that:
minimises data duplication
accepts the data provided
uses recognised naming conventions
ensures data integrity.
Ensure you use all and only the fields shown in the sample data set.
Screen print your database relationships.
Activity 2: Table structures and validation (45 minutes)
Create an efficient table structure based on Activity 1 and the data shown in the sample
data file.
The table structure must use suitable validation to meet these requirements:
a record will not save without the customer title and customer surname information
being present
a record will not save if the customer title is invalid
a record will not save if the customer postcode is not in the correct format
a record will not save if a repair is assigned to an invalid customer
a record will not save if the hours worked are outside of the range
