IOP2604 MAY/JUNE 2017 MEMO

1i)THE MENTAL HEALTH CONTINUUM MODEL.

It refers to function on the positive health and well-being dimension, and consists of three main
components namely psychological/personal well-being(PWB),social well wellbeing,(SWB) and emotional
well being(EWB).Wellbeing on the positive health and well being dimension is also conceptualised on a
continuum representing threelevels or categories of well being namely languishing(ie low levels of
emotional, social and psychological well being, moderate mental health and flourishing(ie high levels of
emotional,social and psychological well-being).

ii)The broaden-and-build model of positive emotions.

Positive emotions such as joy, gratitude and contentment are fleeting conditions and last only a few
minutes,as do other positive emotions, yet high frequencies of them are of great importance for building
and sustaining well-being.We have more words for negative emotions than for positive ones, and
negative emotions have been studied more.Negative emotions grab our attention and prepare us for a
fight/flight reaction or other direct action tendency. This model posits that positive emotions open up
our minds and expand our perceptual abilities(ie broaden our functional capacity).Positive emotions not
only broaden the mind, perceptual awareness and creative action possibilities but also build more
durable personalresources. They contribute over time, together with the broadening effect,to building
intellectual resources eg the capacity to be mindful, social resources eg ability to give social support
,physical resources eg cardiovascular health and psychological resources such as resilience.

iii)The PERMA model of well being

PERMA is the acronym for a well being model developed by Martin SELIGMAN.It identifies five essential
components of well-being,namely positive emotions,engagement,positive relationships,meaning and
accomplishment. The model is not a theory in a strict senseas it currently stands but an enumeration of
five components that he saw as the most important elements of well-being.Inorder to qualify as a
component, each of these elements had to fulfil the following criteria:

 It must contribute to well-being
 People must pursue an element for its own sake, and not as a means to another end or element.
 Each should permit to be defined and measured independently of the other elements.
ACCORDING TO THIS MODEL WE NEED POSITIVE EMOTIONS AS SUBJECTIVELY JUDGED TO
EXPERIENCE WELL BEING IN LIFE.
