Advocates for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. (Extraordinary nursing) Course outcomes have prepared me to meet Program Outcome #5 by maintaining my professionalism while advocating for my patients through compassion, using evidence-based knowledge, and collaborative nursing practice. I show sympathy and concern while building a trusting relationship. I share the knowledge from evidence-based material and through experience. Additionally, I collaborate with my preceptor in regards of the plan of care and the next step of action necessary. An example I have achieved this outcome is during my pediatric rotation. A 2-year-old patient that came in with his mom and a CC of an insect bite on his arm. Mother mentioned that she just noticed the bite mark on the morning of the appointment and admitted going to the park the day before. Mother is asking for a shot or antibiotic. The appearance of the mark did not look infected, and both the mom and patient did not complain of pain, itchiness or fever. I collaborated with my preceptor and we agreed that antibiotics were not necessary as there were no symptoms to indicate infection. Additionally, the only shot that could be given is a steroid shot, but we also felt it was not necessary and the side effects of the steroid shot was greater than what the patient was presenting. With a thorough explanation, the mom was agreeable and was educated on what signs to look out for if infection occurs. Instead, an anti-histamine was suggested to take in case he may have an allergic reaction to something from the park. I was able to advocate for the toddler and help determine the best plan of care for him using evidence-based material, collaborative team work, and empathy. A second example from my family clinic is a middle-aged woman with complains of a sinus infection and when leaning her head forward clear drainage would leak from her nose. She was a new patient, and stated she left her last provider because she has had this complaint for weeks and her previous provider blamed her allergies and told her to take Claritin. The patient felt she was not being listened to and knew herself that this was not her regular allergies. I quickly showed empathy, listened attentively, and discussed different possibilities with her. With collaboration with my preceptor, we agreed the next step would be a CT of her sinuses and to collect a swab of her drainage to rule out it was not spinal fluid. The patient returned to the office to discuss her CT results and found out that her right sinus was almost completely blocked due to mucosal thickening and that she had a deviated septum. She was referred to an ENT and the patient was very grateful of the finding. The patient verbalized her appreciation of our listening and communication skills, team work
