Workforce planning is the process of analysing an organisation’s likely future needs for people in terms
of numbers, skills and locations. It allows the organisation to plan how those needs can be met through
recruitment and training. It is vital for a company like Tesco to plan ahead. Because the company is
growing, Tesco needs to recruit on a regular basis for both the food and non-food parts of the business 1.
Workforce planning is used for Tesco’s recruitment, selection and staff training in different ways with
varying degrees of success. They would look at the candidate’s skills, knowledge and the number of
employees they have and need in order to become successful. The objective of this plan is to get the
best candidates for a particular job. Without the right staff with the right skills, Tesco would not be able
to provide goods and services to satisfy customer requirements. The organisation draws up a workforce
plan to identify their future staffing requirements. For example, Tesco would develop workforce plans to
recruit a new IT manager due to the current manager retiring in eight months’ time 2. For example in
2008/09, Tesco calculated that to support its business growth there will be a demand for around 4,000
new managers. This planning process runs each year from the last week in February. There are quarterly
reviews in May, August and November, so Tesco can adjust staffing levels and recruit where necessary.
This allows Tesco sufficient time and flexibility to meet its demands for staff and allows the company to
meet its strategic objectives, for example, to open new stores and maintain customer service standards 3.
Recruitment methods
A job centre is a place where people who are looking for work can visit to get
advice on finding a job and to search advertisements placed by companies or
people who are looking for new employees4. An advantage of job centres is
that it has a wide choice of candidates a business can select from. The
business would be able to link their job description and person
specification in order to find the right candidate for a particular job. This would increase the business’
productivity resulting in the business to improve their sales and revenue volume which would allow
them to invest in new products, services and pay their regular costs such as salary.
Another advantage would be business would be able to access new employees in difficult events such as
Christmas or Black Friday. Due to high sales Tesco would require more employees to manufacture goods
or deliver the goods. For example, they may need more delivery drivers therefore the job centre would
allow them to find individuals with driving skills therefore allowing them to deliver and meet their
customers’ needs resulting in customer satisfaction and an increase in sales and revenue.
However, there are lots of CVs that Tesco would have to go through which would be very time
consuming. This would not allow them to do other duties which would decrease their productivity
leaving customers to be unsatisfied with the service. They may also make the mistake of recruiting the
inappropriate candidate and losing the best candidate. This would increase their costs as they would
need to provide the employee with training sessions in order to fit in and carry their duties. The
candidate fails to carry out duties then this would negatively impact the business as this would lead to
less productivity and customer service.
