Werkgeheugen
Werkgeheugen = het actief onderhouden en manipuleren van het kortetermijngeheugen.

 Het actieve werkgedeelte van het verstand.

Het herhalen van informatie is belangrijk voor de activiteit en toegankelijkheid in het
kortetermijngeheugen.

Prefrontale cortex (PFC) is het belangrijkste voor het werkgeheugen en executieve functies. Schade
aan de frontale kwab kan zorgen voor het niet kunnen plannen en organiseren van iets. Dit wordt
ook wel dysexecutive syndrome genoemd, wat een verstoorde handicap is om na te denken en te
plannen.

De prefrontale cortex kan worden onderverdeeld in 3 hoofdgebieden, waaronder de lateral
prefrontal cortex. Deze kan ook worden onderverdeeld in 2 delen, namelijk de dorsolaterale
prefrontale cortex (DLPFC) en de ventrolaterale prefrontale cortex (VLPFC). De orbitofrontale en
mediale prefrontale cortex zijn betrokken bij veel geheugen en cognitieve controle functies, vooral
doelgericht gedrag en planning maar zijn minder betrokken bij het werkgeheugen dan de laterale
gebieden van de PFC.

 De DLPFC is belangrijk voor het behoud van items in het werkgeheugen.
 DLPFC activiteit blijft robuust tegen afleidingen.
 Spatiale werkgeheugen meer aan rechterkant van brein.
 Verbale werkgeheugen meer linkerkant van brein.

2 modellen van werkgeheugen
Atkinson & Shiffrin model:

 Sensory memory: informatie vervalt automatisch en snel
 Short-term memory (STM): informatie kan worden behouden als het wordt herhaald en
bewuste aandacht naar is.
 Long-term memory (LTM): Herinneringen kunnen behouden worden voor langere periodes,
zonder het vereisende herhalen of de bewuste aandacht.




Inkomende informatie zal eerst naar het sensorische geheugen gaan. Daarna zullen elementen van
de sensorische informatie overgaan naar het kortetermijngeheugen. Vanaf hier gaan ze door
verschillende controle processen zoals het herhalen, coderen en ophalen van informatie. In sommige
gevallen wordt de informatie doorgestroomd naar het langetermijngeheugen.
