GEOGRAPHIC DATA.
The organisation is in the northern part of the Free State, when passing through N1, the city
of Maokeng is just in centre, almost equal distance to and from Johannesburg city
(Gauteng), and to and from Bloemfontein (Free State), the organisation is found at
Maokeng, a township near the city of Kroonstad, at Mphohadi Teachers’ College, just

1.2 BRIEF PROFILE OF THE COMMUNITY WHERE THE PROJECT IS BASED
THE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT.
SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT (theory)
According to Swanepoel H. & De Beer F. in Chapter 2.3, the social consists of institutions
such as the primary institution of the family and the secondary institutions the school and
the church, and clubs and interest groups. There are also informal institutions such as
friendships, families are represented in many of the secondary institutions and families also
turned to communicate with one another.
All communities are organised: they have, for instance, power structures, schools, interest
groups, and civic organisations. How the organisation are structured and how they relate to
one another, form the social environment within which the community development takes
place. In fact, the existence of such organisations and forms of interaction is proof that the
community itself is already busy with community development. As part of the social
environment, one also finds negative factors such as delinquency, power struggles, gang
stars, and anti-social behaviour such as prostitution, drug abuse, child abuse and domestic
violence. In poor communities, the rate of people suffering from HIV/AIDS is important
factor in the social environment. Not only is it a health issue but it affects social
relationships as well, it contributes to growth of child-headed households. Crime is another
factor in social environment which negatively affects the whole community.

MAOKENG SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT
Like any other community we have our own power structures, we have the schools, the
churches, social clubs and other organisations within the community, the social clubs like
stokvels they already show that our community is already busy with community
development, the community also have negative factors such as gang stars, and anti- social
behaviour such as prostitution, drug abuse, child abuse & neglection, domestic violence,
crime, you name them all, sugar daddies dating young school girls and leaving them with
unwanted pregnancies which leads to STDs, HIV/AIDS, child abandonment and child headed
households. and all these factors have a negative effect on the whole community, because
as much as the community is busy with development all these negative factors are taking
the community development projects back to square one.
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT (theory)
According to Swanepoel H. & DE Beer F, to be effective the CDW must know and understand
the local political environment. The local political environment consists of political leaders
and political groupings, with political activities such as meetings and marches. Political
communications consists of messages about political orientation and policy preferences.
There can also be, and usually is, conflict and strive in the political environment.
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT.
Political environment plays an important role in the development of the community, like
any other community Maokeng has its own political environment. The division and the
confusion that we see in parliament does not only end there, but it affects all citizens of
South Africa and its communities, the opposition parties always opposing the ruling party, as
if that is not enough to cause any damage, the division that is within the ruling party itself
from up to bottom, these is a challenge we are experiencing down in Maokeng, everybody is
pulling the rope to a different direction, nobody seem to agree on anything the other half of
the community is following President Zuma’s ANC while the other is following Cyril
Ramaphosa. And that is a big threat to the development of a community. And politicians are
too arrogant to put the needs of the community first, they all preach Batho-pele principles
but none of them practices what they preach. There can also be, an unusually is, conflict and
strife in the political environment. Hence it is known that political differences in a
community can render it incapable of agreeing on development projects.
CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT (theory)
“The cultural environment consists of the values and mores of the society. These values and
more are often spoken of as the traditions of the people. According to this traditions people
have place in society and certain obligations towards society, while they can expect that the
society will guide them and provide a living environment for them-as long as they are tue to
their traditions. Culture creates or contains taboos and provide a framework according to
which people act and react to daily life.” that’s according to Swanepoel H. & De Beer F.
