Application of Statistics in Health Care
Statistics is currently being applied widely in healthcare due to its importance in
decision making process. Healthcare organizations use statistical analysis in gauging their
performance results. Statistical information is essentially used in human health service
agencies both private and public in determining the overall health of a given population. To
effectively assess patient health risks, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies have to keenly
evaluate patient records, assess symptoms and determine the effectiveness of various
treatment options.
The delivery of quality healthcare services has been a major challenge to many
healthcare organizations. Through the use of statistics, such organizations can effectively
measure their success and failure points through performance analysis (Hayat, 2018). Quality
improvement managers also develop standards of ensuring excellence in service, and
benchmarks for the determination of future results. These are effectively done through the use
of statistics. Thus, through statistics, organizations can effectively ensure that the quality of
healthcare is well improved and patient outcomes are boosted.
Data collection and statistical analysis can be used in performing clinical trials for the
introduction of new treatments and techniques so that their benefits and side effects are
determined and Statistics can help in determining the effectiveness of medication and other
treatment options (Sosa et al., 2016). For instance, medical researchers interested in
understanding a particular drug can collect data on patients who use an alternative treatment
or medication and those who use the desired treatment or medication, then perform a
statistical analysis to determine the effectiveness of the new one (Hayat, 2018). Through
statistics, it is also possible to determine the adverse effects of certain drugs and the kinds of
patients who should use them and those who should not.
