Tear Fund
History and background
In 1960 the cold war broke out. Many UK Christians sent money to
evangelical Christian groups to give to those in need. The churches
then sent the money to existing groups who helped people before
George Hoffman was hired in 1967 to sent a group to use the
money to help others themselves. On 29 May 1968 George and the
members of the group Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund Committee
and met fir the first time. They intended to include Christian
compassion with the necessary practical work that this fund did.
They then established the fund would be called Tearfund. Tearfund
helped a new phase enter of understanding the gospels news and
emphasised caring for the physical and spiritual needs of the poor.
What services and work they provide?
Tear fund works through church groups to give help to the poor in
countries around the world. They are working in over 50 countries
currently, and they provide emergency aid to those affected by
natural disasters and help to carry out long term projects that will
help to support the local community that they are working in. In
the UK people show their support for tearfund by rising money to
help the charity complete their work. People do this by having
coffee mornings and buying Christmas cards made by tearfund.
Another example of how tearfund has helped was that they sent a
nurse to Bangladesh for two years to help others in crisis. She worked
with other organisations like yearfund. This is how your £1 given to
tearfund is spent:
What it the relationship between the work of the charities and
Christian beliefs?
The relationship between the work that tear fund do and the
Christian beliefs is that they try to put into effect Jesus’ command
to ‘love your neighbour’. The people who work at tear fund so this
because they believe that they are practicing the unconditional
and unselfish love Jesus mentions in the gospel.
An example of how tearfund put their Christian beliefs into
influence is to work with teenagers and children in poor countries,
like in Columbia. Tearfund work with partner agencies, churches
and youth groups in Columbia to set up places for children to go.
Tearfund has helped to set up over 30 sports clubs that allow children to go for football training and meet new
people. The clubs also provides safe spaces for young people who are at risk of joining gangs and to be able to
socialise with other young people. Another thing they do is they offer mentoring to the children that will help
with equip themselves with valuable life skills.
