Unit 7- Writing (informal letter)

Dear Emma,

Thank you very much for your last letter. It was great to hear from you after so many months. How
have you been? When I read you are going to attend a Dutch course in Enschede next month, I was
thrilled. Perhaps, we can meet again, that would be awesome.

There are some spots in Enschede that I would like to introduce to you. To begin with, cafes and
restaurants, which are a good combination with the upcoming good weather. As you may know,
Enschede is known for its cozy terraces and lunchrooms. My personal favourite is ‘de Broodbode’.
The previously mentioned suggestion, could be both an in- and outdoor activity. As an addition, to the
outdoor activities, I advise you to discover the beautiful parks of Enschede, they are perfect for
picnics!

On the other hand, for the indoor activities, there is many variation. Because, you’re interested in art, I
advise you to visit museums, for example: ‘ Rijksmuseum’ and ‘Concordia’. Furthermore, there is an
entertainment boulevard in Enschede called ‘Go Planet Park’, with, inter alia; a huge cinema, a
bowling centre and a wok restaurant.

I hope you find my advice helpful. Know that you can always contact me. If you’re in Enschede, I
would like to do one of the mentioned activities together. Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours,
Lissy

Unit 8- Writing (Article)

Unusual hobbies
Firstly, responding to your invitation, I would like to say that documentaries about unusual
hobbies will surely be warmly welcomed by viewers all over the country. I would like to
suggest two examples of the main concepts to form these programmes.

Beetle fighting
My first idea is to make a programme about beetle fighting. Beetle fighting is a range of
competitive sporting activities in which the beetles are pitted against each other. Beetle
fighting is especially popular in Asia. Some men come to fight beetles and gamble, while
others come simply to meet and socialise. Participants are typically low-income farmers, but
there are wealthy competitors too. It would be an original idea to make a documentary about
a beetle owner and to keep up with a tournament. Not only will this episode of the series be
attractive because of the uncommon concept but it will, likewise conclude traditions and
addictions, such as gambling.

Ghost Hunting
Secondly, an upcoming, but odd hobby; ghost hunting. Ghost hunting is the process of
investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost-hunting
team will attempt to collect evidence supporting the existence of paranormal activity. The
investigators want to proof a sign of ‘life’ with modern scientific equipment. This programme
will be attractive to viewers because of the excitement and adrenaline. Even Though,
paranormal activity is a scary thought for most people, this idea will be appealing because
almost everyone denies the existence of ghosts.

In my opinion, these programme proposals would be of interest for an enormous general
audience and the ideas are suitable for your series. I am looking forward to your decision.
