Human reproduction
Male reproductive system: function – produce sperm + secrete testosterone
1. Scrotum:
Functions:
Acts as a temp regulator (+-350C) = necessary for formation of fertile sperm.
Houses + protects testes
2. Testes:
Functions:
Produces sperm ( germinal epithelium) + testosterone (interstitial cells)
3. Germinal epithelium
Function: allow for meiosis: produces sperm
4. Seminiferous tubules:
Function: holds the germinal epithelium that produces the sperm cells
5. Epididymis:
Functions:
Immature sperm mature to become motile/ fertile
Immature sperm are stored for several months
6. Sperm duct (vas deferens):
, Function:
pushes mature sperm forward by strong peristaltic waves from epididymis -
urethra – ejaculation.
7. Urethra:
Function:
duct - transportation semen/ urine.
8. Prostate Gland:
Function:
Secretes a fluid aids the transport of the sperm + contains enzymes make sperm
more active (Makes up a third of the semen)
Seminal vesicle:
Function: secretes seminal fluid containing enzymes/ nutrients.
9. Penis:
Function: Deposits sperm into the female’s vagina during copulation.
10. Foreskin:
Function: to protect the tip of the penis/maintaining its sensitivity.
Differences:
- Semen: from sperm duct + accessory glands
Sperm: from testes
- Erection: stiffening of penis
Ejaculation: expulsion of semen
Female reproductive system: function – produce eggs, secrete female hormones,
sustain developing foetus
1. Ovaries:
