NUR 391 Standards of Practice Hello Professor and Class, One of the 12 standards listed by the Transcultural Nursing Society is that of Knowledge of Cultures, or standard 3. According to the TCN S (2010), “Nurses shall gain an understanding of the perspectives, traditions, values, practices, and family systems of culturally diverse individuals, families, communities and populations for whom they care, as well as a knowledge of the complex variables that affect the achievement of health and well-being” (p. 6). The idea behind having knowledge of cultures other than one’s own is to allow the nurse to provide optimal care with the understanding of their patient’s culture, which vary from patient to patient and may require unique accommodations that the nurses need to be made mindful of. “One measure to achieve a multicultural workforce is through strengthening of recruitment and retention efforts in the hospitals, clinics, and academic settings” (Andrews, 2016). In my area of practice in dialysis, cultural sensitivity is definitely applied. It comes with the working in New York City and our patient population is diverse in race, ethnicity, and gender, among others. For our patients, it’s important to understand barriers to compliance in treatment for our patients – and some of them can be driven by culture. For instance, diet is an important part of keeping healthy as a dialysis patient, but for one’s culture, certain foods may be a part of their diet. Through patient education and collaboration with the dialysis dietician, we can help the patient make modifications to their diet to accommodate their cultural and their health needs. Another example would be observing a patient’s religion. Dialysis treatment is typically 3 times per week. If a patient would need to be rescheduled for treatment due to the observance of a religious holiday, we can rearrange the schedule to make those accommodations. As a healthcare organization located in the most diverse city in the world, I believe that we make use of and work to get more knowledge of cultures in our practice. Reference: Andrews, M.
