Please note I live in the United Arab Emirates and all my community service and outreach
was done in Dubai.
City Lights Church - A Church in Dubai, that is made up of mainly South Africans, that has
a hospitality volunteer team who has helped families during Covid. I am already a member
of this Church so getting in contact to volunteer was easy. I spoke to the Pastors wife
Starla and another lady named Lauren who heads up the hospitality team to see how I
could get involved. After a conversation with both ladies, we realized there was a gap in
the program where I could step in. This would involve me heading up a grocery shopping
roster where families in the church would sign up with me and I would allocate them to
another family or person in need that they would do a grocery shop for. All the people in
need have lost their job due to the pandemic and had no means to feed themselves or
their children. Many of the people in need did not go to the church and came to the
church and its members seeking money and food when the pandemic hit
Dubai British School - Jumeirah Park, Special Needs department
Dubai British School is a primary school in Dubai. I had found our about this opportunity
through a friend who was already involved. The role was to be an LSA (learning support
aide) to children in the school with special needs, be that autism, learning difficulties,
social struggles and some physical disabilities. My friend past on my details to the head
of Student services, Gemma. Gemma reached out to me and asked me to come in and
meet her. I met her a few days later where we discussed my current credentials, i` told her
I’m studying and explained I’m looking for volunteer opportunities to not only gain
experience from but only document. Gemma reached out 3 days later to say they have a
little girl with learning disabilities and some social anxiety who they would love me to
assist.
Stray Dogs Centre UAQ -Stray Dogs Centre UAQ is a registered, non profit, organisation
with the intention to help abused, abandoned, neglected and forgotten stray animals in
Umm Al Quwain. Even though I have volunteered with them in the past and have walked
the dogs, helped rehabilitate abused dogs and been involved in donation drive,
unfortunately due to COVID they were not accepting volunteers as most activities happen
in groups. They also took very long to respond to my emails and messages which was
frustrating and made it hard for me to plan accordingly.
Al Noor Training Centre for Persons with Disabilities - The Al Noor Training Centre was
established in 1981. Their goal is to enrich the lives of hundreds of children and young
adults with various physical and cognitive challenges. They take a holistic approach to the
wellbeing and development of students, who benefit from individual and specially
designed programs to suit their specific needs. They offered for me to come in and assist
with the children’s sports day only and help with supervising. I could not attend that
specific day and this is all they could offer me due to COVID so I did not go through with
this organization due to these factors.
