In science, ELLs might be difficult because of the vocabulary of science presents a huge difficulty, material is covered very fast, directions are often multistep and difficult, there are too many concepts explained on each page of a science text and Visuals may be confusing and difficult to understand. Teachers should use explanatory devices. The importance of explanatory devices is that they contribute to the clarity of the instruction by providing visual clues to the meaning of scientific material. In the preparation phase of instruction, teachers collect the materials they will use to make the input comprehensible to their ELLs. Teachers should be encouraged to teach slowly as this will give students the time to grasp most of the material and this boost the learning process. They should also have cognitive empathy. Through cognitive empathy teachers understand feelings and goals learners bring with them into the classroom. When teachers have cognitive empathy with their students, they are able to recognize the moment when students have not understood and come the come up with ways that clear up misunderstandings and hence making learning better.
