Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to listen properly, speak with
, confidence and pronounce words clearly thus empowering to apply for his new job.
Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
I have chosen the multi-syllabus type as it is based on a combination of topics, structures,
vocabulary items and skills practice. Alberto has an interest in topics of the environment,
technology, science and current affairs. This syllabus is important as Alberto would like to
focus on vocabulary- technology. Skills practice is evident in Alberto wanting to improve
his listening and speaking. The multi-syllabus allows me to use authentic materials as
Alberto requested. This syllabus will allow me to make changes as I see fit.
Based on the questionnaire from Alberto, the topics are catered according to his interests,
hobbies and needs. He is interested in the environment, current affairs, science and
technology. The use of these topics will ensure that Alberto is attentive and will drive him
to do the work as these topics are his interests, thus providing results. Topics that are
used are Environment (healing of the ocean); current affairs (riots in South Africa); science
(the vaccination for Covid-19); technology (artificial intelligence); jobs (interview and role-
play to prepare him for possible positions). Technical vocabulary will be constantly
improved.
According to the questionnaire, the target skills are listening, speaking and pronunciation.
Alberto is focused on improving these skills thus we will apply all the needs in the syllabus
based on skills that need focus.
The essence of the syllabus will enable me to adapt to the student’s needs.
Speaking skills will be tackled first. By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to
have a conversation about current affairs. Alberto will be able to provide his opinion
about riots in South Africa. The student will be encouraged to do a lot of speaking. I will
facilitate the discussion pertaining to current affairs. I will listen to Alberto and ask him
clarify his thoughts and opinions. I will use humour as Alberto requires fun activities in
class. I will monitor and assess his speaking skills. As this is the first hour, it can serve as a
warming up stage. Speaking to the student will allow the student to integrate into an
English mode and provide confidence for the lesson.
The next skill will be speaking and the sub-skill pronunciation. In the first stage, I gathered
how he speaks. I was able to identify any errors. In this stage, we will focus on the
technical vocabulary. I will provide a list of the vocabulary. I will go through it. I will
explain its meaning and form. I will then correct Alberto’s pronunciation. Correction will
be done through drilling techniques and ensuring that he sees the way I shape my mouth
when I say the relevant words. Alberto is Spanish so it is important for me to note the
pronunciation and difficulty with the letter ‘p’. In order to correct this, more emphasis will
be placed on this. I will also make use of a phenomics chart. As Alberto has indicated that
writing is essential in his lesson, I will create a fill the gaps worksheet for him to use, thus
