600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet

Please write the essay under the four headings given.

a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:


Authentic materials in foreign language teaching are valuable for students' learning as they
provide real-life examples of the English used and genuine materials aimed at native speakers.
Information from authentic material can give a cultural perspective on a given event or issue,
where students can learn the context rather than just looking at the target language. Authentic
materials can add further excitement and motivation to learning the target language by providing
critical perspectives on topics, issues, and events. Utilizing authentic resources will also help the
students achieve the goal of understanding and using English in real life and will help the students
gain confidence in reaching that goal. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to encounter
topics, words, sentence structures, or vocabulary that they may not find in ESL teaching resources.

b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.

The authentic text chosen is relevant for the students to read as it is a recent article about
extreme weather worldwide caused by climate change and global warming which effects all
countries. For students, it is essential to keep up to date with current events and read articles
targeted at native speakers. Students from all backgrounds will relate to the topic, and the pre-
vocabulary words will give them a better grasp of the chosen text. The 12 vocabulary words have
been checked on Vocabkitchen.com for the CEFR levels and are appropriate for the class to learn
more about the words' meaning, form, and pronunciation.

c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:


The first activity, "What's the Word?", is an exercise for students to practice their dictionary skills
by determining the meaning, form, and pronunciation of words. These words are suitable for their
advanced level skills and will broaden their understanding of the selected text. Through the use of
dictionaries, the activity also enables students to improve their vocabulary and expand their
knowledge of the chosen words.

The second activity, "Information Hunt!" aims to assess students' understanding of the selected
text and to conduct additional research on global warming. Global warming and climate change
are prevalent worldwide; thus, it is an appropriate choice for the class since it is related to the text
and is relevant for all students, regardless of their background. As well as gaining information
