,1. OBSERVATION ACTIVITY
Use the observation schedule to note down your observations of the following for each
period:

Period 1

The classroom is very clean and neat. There is also a wastebasket in the front of the class
and hand sanitizer available. There are seats for 38 learners.

The atmosphere (e.g. is it inviting, interesting, conducive to learning, well-resourced or not,
etc.)

The teaching approach (e.g. direct instruction, interactive learning, etc.) and how learners
respond to this

The teacher gives direct instruction to the learners to go sit and open their books and copy
the writing from the board into their writing books. They followed this instruction very well.
The teachers also encourage interactive learning with the way she discussed the work with
the learner. She asked the learners questions and followed through with this.

The expectations the teacher has of learners (how they must enter, where they must sit,
what they may or may not do, how they may participate) and how learners respond to this

The teacher expect that learners should stand in two lines (one for boys and the other for
the girls). They should enter the classroom quietly and go and sit where they were seated in
the beginning of the year to their assigned desks. They must greet the teacher and take out
their books as soon as they are seated. As soon as the teacher begin the lesson they can ask
questions and go through their work.

Time spent on task (how much of the period is used for teaching and learning) and what
learners do if there is time left

50-minute period.

All 50 mutes were spent writing the work from the board and listening to the teacher.

, Learner interactions

The learners were very involved as soon as the teacher began discussing the work and
asking them question.

Learner behaviour in general

The learners’ behaviour during this period was excellent. They did what they were told and
when discussing the work, they didn’t yell out they lift their hands and wait their time to
speak.
